Kylian Mbappé Condemns AI Meme Comparing Him to Dictators
Kylian Mbappé is used to dominating timelines as easily as he dominates defences. This time, he’s not laughing.
The Real Madrid and France forward has condemned a viral AI-generated meme that pastes his face onto the body of a dictator, calling it a sign of “a lack of political and human awareness”.
The image, widely shared across social media, is often used by fans to underline how Mbappé can take over matches almost single-handedly. Others use it to hint at his perceived power inside clubs. The joke has spread quickly. Mbappé has now drawn a line.
Speaking to France Football, he acknowledged the split in how he sees it.
“There’s a funny side to it because you can sense that, for some people, it’s good natured,” he said. The internet loves exaggeration, and few players invite it more than a World Cup winner who bends games to his will.
Then he cut through the humour.
“Then there’s a side that’s a bit less funny, because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history.
“Being compared to people who murder others, or who have made millions upon millions of people miserable... I don’t think I’ve done that in my life.
“On one hand, I know it’s done lightheartedly and doesn’t go that far, but it sometimes reveals a lack of political and human awareness among people.”
The tension is clear: Mbappé understands the culture of memes, but he’s not willing to let history be turned into a punchline at his expense.
The France captain also addressed the “Mobut” nickname that surfaced during the 2026 World Cup, a reference coined by his international team-mate Ousmane Dembélé. The name plays on Mobutu Sese Seko, the long-time dictator of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, who ruled the country — then Zaire — for three decades.
“Ousmane, that’s a different thing. He took that from social media. He’s just having a laugh,” Mbappé said.
Between a dressing-room joke and a global meme, Mbappé has drawn a clear distinction. One is banter among team-mates. The other, in his eyes, crosses into something far less innocent.
