Julian Alvarez: Atletico Madrid Blocks Barcelona Move, Arsenal in Pursuit
Julian Alvarez has not set foot on Atletico Madrid’s training pitches since being told, behind closed doors, that his dream move to Barcelona is off the table. For now, the only open door leads to London – and Arsenal.
The stand-off has escalated quickly. Sources have told BBC Sport that Atletico informed Alvarez and his camp earlier this week that they will not enter talks with Barcelona over the Argentina forward. Not at any price, not under any structure. The answer was no.
Since then, the 26-year-old has missed two consecutive training sessions, officially citing illness. On paper, it is a straightforward explanation. In reality, it lands right in the middle of a bitter tug-of-war over his future.
Atletico slam the door on Barcelona
Atletico have not tried to soften their position. They have gone public. Twice.
On Wednesday, after Barcelona president Joan Laporta insisted the club still wanted to sign Alvarez, Atletico issued a blunt statement: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.” No ambiguity, no diplomatic phrasing, just a flat refusal.
Twenty-four hours later, the board went even harder. In a second statement, they said the members of Atletico de Madrid’s board of directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.”
The message was aimed at more than just Barcelona. It was a signal to Alvarez himself: if he wants out, it will not be via the Camp Nou.
Arsenal emerge as the escape route
While one door slams shut, another has been quietly pushed open. Atletico are prepared to sell Alvarez to Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would be one of the most eye-catching deals of the summer.
Atleti director Mateu Alemany was in London last week. There, he met Arsenal officials and made Atletico’s stance crystal clear: they want 150m euros (£128m) for Alvarez. That is the number, and they are not shy about it.
Mikel Arteta, for his part, is determined to bring Alvarez to the Emirates this month. He sees the Argentine as a transformative signing. Yet there is a problem Arsenal cannot solve with money alone: Alvarez’s preference remains Barcelona. That desire has stalled Arsenal’s move, even as the two clubs edge closer to an agreement.
A deal waiting on one word
Despite the complication, talks between Atletico and Arsenal are described as positive. The framework of a club-to-club agreement is there. The financials are being shaped. The path is clear.
What is missing is the player’s green light.
If Alvarez decides in the coming days that Arsenal is his way out of Madrid, the transfer is expected to move quickly. Atletico are ready. Arsenal are ready. The clock is ticking, and the illness-related absences only add to the tension around the training ground.
Barcelona remain on the outside, shut out by Atletico’s uncompromising stance and boxed in by those two stark public statements.
Alvarez wanted Barcelona. Atletico want Arsenal’s money. Arsenal want Alvarez. Somebody, very soon, will have to give ground.
