Joshua Zirkzee: Loan Talks Between Fiorentina and Manchester United
Joshua Zirkzee could be heading back to Serie A, with Fiorentina in talks with Manchester United over an initial loan for the Dutch forward.
The negotiations centre on a deal that would take Zirkzee to Florence until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent next summer. The structure suits all parties: Fiorentina get a closer look at a talented but stalled striker, while United retain the chance of a fee that reflects his potential rather than his current squad status.
There is still work to do. Those close to the discussions do not consider an agreement imminent, but there is a growing belief that the clubs can find common ground before the 1 September transfer deadline. Crucially, Zirkzee is open to the move and prepared to swap Old Trafford for a league he knows well.
United paid £36.5m to sign him from Bologna in 2024, after he had been named Serie A’s Under-23 player of the season for 2023-24. He arrived in Manchester as a forward on the rise, full of craft between the lines and with the kind of technical profile the club had been accused of neglecting.
His start hinted at a smooth transition. Zirkzee scored on his debut in a 1-0 win over Fulham, offering a glimpse of the penalty-box presence and composure that had made him such a coveted prospect in Italy.
The momentum never truly followed. Across two seasons he has struggled to nail down a regular starting role, limited to 27 starts in 75 appearances in all competitions. Last season underlined the problem: just five Premier League starts in 2025-26, nine goals in total for United, and long stretches spent watching from the bench.
At 25, with three years left on his contract, Zirkzee sits at a crossroads. Too valuable to be written off, not established enough to be considered central to United’s plans. A loan with an option to buy offers a release valve.
For Fiorentina, the attraction is obvious. They know what a confident Zirkzee looks like in Serie A. They have seen him link play, drop into pockets, and drag defenders into uncomfortable areas. If they can unlock that version again, an option to buy becomes a bargain rather than a risk.
For United, it is a calculated step. A season in Florence could restore both rhythm and market value. Or it could confirm that his future lies away from Old Trafford for good.
Either way, the next move will say plenty about how quickly Zirkzee’s early promise can be turned back into something more tangible than potential.
