Ilyas Ansah’s Premier League dream has arrived early. At 21, with barely a full senior season behind him at Union Berlin, the versatile forward has swapped the Bundesliga for England and a shot at the game’s most unforgiving stage.
This is not a kid talking his way into the spotlight. His numbers already did that. Ansah featured in all but one of Union Berlin’s matches last season, scoring five goals and supplying three assists. In a side that often had to scrap for every inch, he showed enough sharpness and personality to catch the eye beyond Germany’s borders.
Now he lands in the Premier League, calling it exactly what it is for him: a dream.
“It’s a dream come true for me to play in the Premier League, and for such a big club – it’s really an honour for me,” he said on arrival, the excitement obvious.
He has heard the stories about the dressing room, the standards, the tempo. Now he wants to live inside it, not just watch it from afar.
The pathway here has been deliberate. Ansah has already worn the national shirt at under-20 and under-21 level for Germany, a sign that his development has been tracked closely at home. Coaches like his adaptability. He can drift in from the left, stretch the pitch from the right, or slide into the No 10 role and knit attacks together. Wherever he starts, he promises one thing: he will empty the tank.
“I’m a very flexible player. I can play almost anywhere up front – on the left side, on the right side, maybe as a 10. I’m definitely a player who always gives his best and leaves it all on the pitch,” he explained. It’s not a marketing line. It’s his calling card.
What he really wants, though, is the rush that defines every attacking player.
“Taking my man on, beating players, shooting on target and scoring goals – that’s my main goal I want to reach at this club.”
The timing of his move adds an extra edge. His new side have started fast, with two wins from two and early-season optimism bubbling in the stands. He walks into a dressing room that already has momentum, rather than one searching for it.
“It’s been a really exciting start to the season – two wins out of two games. Now, it’s time for me to get into the team and be a part of what they are already achieving.”
That is the challenge now. At Union Berlin, he had carved out a regular role. In the Premier League, he must fight for every minute. The league is quicker, the scrutiny harsher, the margins thinner. But this is the stage he wanted, the one he spoke about while making his name in the Bundesliga.
