Harvey Elliott in Loan Talks with Valencia as Transfer Deadline Approaches

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the clock ticks down towards Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

The Spanish club have pushed to the front of the queue for the 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several sides across the summer. With the window closing at 11pm on September 1, Valencia are now leading the chase to take him to La Liga.

Elliott is understood to have held conversations with los Che head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla, with the player seeking clarity over how much he would feature and where he would be used. The proposed deal is a straight loan, but any move is likely to be tied to a Liverpool contract extension, designed to protect the value of a player whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.

Right now, Elliott finds himself stuck in limbo at Anfield. He has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, a stark contrast to his status as one of the club’s brightest young hopes when he first broke through.

Last season did little to change that trajectory. Sent on loan to Aston Villa, he barely featured. A late cameo in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago locked him into two clubs for the campaign, preventing another move in January and effectively tying him to a bit-part role at Villa Park.

Villa, for their part, made sure it stayed that way. Determined not to trigger an obligation to buy, they kept Elliott well short of the 10-game milestone that would have activated a permanent £35m transfer. As Unai Emery’s side surged to Europa League glory, Elliott remained on the fringes, watching the celebrations more than shaping them.

He returned to Liverpool in the summer, part of the pre-season tour of the United States, but even then his future felt uncertain. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, Elliott admitted he was wrestling with the next step in his career.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions," he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

That intel has now started to arrive. Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. Those conversations have now turned into direct talks over a loan.

For Elliott, a move to Mestalla would offer something he has been starved of over the past 12 months: a defined role and the chance to play regular top-flight football in a major European league. For Liverpool, it would be a way to keep a long-term asset active and visible, rather than letting him drift on the periphery of Iraola’s plans.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances in red. The next one might not come for some time. The question now is whether a season in Spain can turn stalled potential back into a live project for Liverpool – or whether this is the start of a longer goodbye.
