Delhi T20I Against Afghanistan Set to Proceed Amid Security Concerns

For a few tense hours, India’s first T20I against Afghanistan in New Delhi looked like it might be pushed off the calendar by geopolitics rather than rain.

With the BRICS Summit tightening security across the Capital, the opening game of the series at Arun Jaitley Stadium was under serious scrutiny. Delhi Police, stretched by the demands of high-profile delegations and traffic lockdowns, had raised concerns and explored the option of moving the match by a day.

The prospect was real enough to create a ripple of uncertainty around Sunday’s fixture. Same venue, same teams, but possibly a different date.

That doubt has now been shut down.

Late on Thursday evening, the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) stepped in with the clarity everyone wanted. The match, it confirmed, will go ahead as originally planned on Sunday, 13 September.

“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled. Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements,” the association announced in a social media post.

The key meeting with Delhi Traffic Police appears to have swung it. With assurances on movement, security cover and stadium access, the cricket authorities now have the backing they needed to host an international game in the middle of one of the city’s most sensitive security operations.

So the stage stays set: New Delhi will juggle summit motorcades and cricket crowds on the same day, and India’s T20I campaign against Afghanistan will start on time, under lights, exactly where and when it was meant to.
