Cade Tyson Rejoins Gophers for 2026

The University of Minnesota has its scorer back.

Cade Tyson, the wing who carried the Gophers’ offense a year ago, has rejoined the men’s basketball program for the 2026–27 season, the school announced. He is enrolled in classes and will practice with the team while his eligibility status is resolved.

Head coach Niko Medved didn’t hide his relief at having his star back in the building, welcoming Tyson’s return and stressing the program’s support as he navigates the process.

Tyson is not just another returnee. He is the engine.

The 6-foot-7 guard/forward led Minnesota in virtually every meaningful scoring category last season. He topped the Gophers in points per game (19.6), total points (628), free throws made and attempted (175–213), minutes played (36.7), and field goals made and attempted (191–382). He rarely left the floor and rarely wasted a possession.

That production earned him All-Big Ten honorable mention, NABC Second Team All-District honors, and Academic All-District recognition. Minnesota didn’t just lean on him for buckets; he set the standard in the classroom as well.

Tyson arrives back in Minneapolis with a well-traveled résumé. He has already logged four seasons of college basketball: two at Belmont, one at North Carolina, and one at Minnesota. Across those 124 games, he has piled up 1,621 career points, knocked down 213 three-pointers, and grabbed 528 rebounds. Those are the numbers of a seasoned veteran, not a player still trying to find his way.

For Medved, having that kind of experience back in the practice gym changes the feel of the preseason. Tyson can’t yet suit up in games, but his presence in drills, film sessions, and the locker room gives the Gophers a proven leader as they build toward another campaign.

Minnesota opens with an exhibition against Omaha on Oct. 15, then tips off the regular season on Nov. 2 against North Dakota. By then, the Gophers will hope the paperwork has caught up with the player who already looks like the centerpiece of their plans.
