Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken a sharp turn, and it’s away from two of the most talked-about names on the market.
Matteo Moretto has made it plain: Castello Lukeba is not the man Barça are working to sign. Nor is Goncalo Inacio.
For weeks, the Catalan club have been quietly combing the market for a defender who fits a very specific brief. Left-footed. Comfortable building from the back. Someone who can give Hansi Flick a natural balance on that side of the defence and another specialist option alongside his existing centre-backs.

It’s a significant clarification. Lukeba would have brought versatility, security on the ball, and that natural left-sided comfort Barcelona are actively seeking. His ability to cover multiple roles would have appealed to any coach trying to manage a long season across several competitions.
Yet the club’s recruitment team is clearly looking elsewhere.
This is not a case of simply choosing from the most obvious names doing the rounds in the rumour mill. Barcelona’s sporting department is deliberately moving away from the headline options, targeting a different, far less high-profile defender.
The same message applies to Goncalo Inacio.
The Sporting CP centre-back has been another regular in the gossip columns whenever Barcelona’s need for a left-footed defender is mentioned. Young, left-footed, experienced in European competition – on the surface, he fits the template too.
But Moretto’s information points in the opposite direction. Inacio, like Lukeba, is not part of Barcelona’s current plans.
The key detail is recognition.
According to the journalist, the player Barcelona are actively working to sign is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That single point explains a lot: the lack of concrete names, the absence of daily updates, the unusually quiet nature of this chase for a club of Barça’s size.
It also underlines how determined the club are to keep this operation under wraps. No trial balloons in the press. No public courting. Just a discreet push to land a defender who does not sit among the obvious candidates being tossed around in public debate.
