Arsenal's Champions League Journey: New Rules and Rivalries
Arsenal will march back into the Champions League as Premier League champions, but one of Europe’s great arenas is already off the itinerary. The San Siro, so often a stage for English drama, is out of bounds this season.
Not because of form. Because of a rulebook tweak.
UEFA’s revamped Champions League format is already forcing fans to rethink what they know about the competition. Now there’s another twist: clubs are no longer allowed to play the same League Phase fixture three seasons in a row. Arsenal have travelled to face Inter Milan in each of the last two campaigns, in 2024/25 and 2025/26. A third straight visit would break the new rule.
So the Gunners can still draw Inter. They just can’t do it in Milan.
A new era, a new map
The qualifiers wrapped up in midweek, and with them came clarity. Arsenal now know the full pool of possible opponents for the League Phase of the 2026/27 Champions League. No more guesswork, no more “to be confirmed” placeholders. The field is set.
The formalities come next. The draw is scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at 17:00 BST. By UEFA’s timeline, the full fixture list — dates, kick-off times, home and away assignments — must land no later than Saturday, August 29. Fans won’t have to scour websites in hope; UEFA have said they’ll push out a warning on their social media channels shortly before the fixtures drop, a digital drumroll before the schedule goes live.
Pot 1 status, limited protection
As champions of England, Arsenal take their place in Pot 1. In the old group-stage era, that status carried a sense of security, a buffer against the giants. Not anymore.
Under the League Phase model, the pots shape the draw but don’t shield anyone. Every club plays eight matches against eight different opponents: two from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, two from Pot 3, and two from Pot 4. One at home, one away in each case. Your own seeding doesn’t spare you from anyone else’s.
So Arsenal’s crown guarantees prestige, not comfort.
There are still some hard lines. Clubs from the same country cannot meet in the League Phase, which means no early collision with Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, or Manchester United. Those heavyweight domestic duels are being saved for the knockouts, if they come at all.
Then there is Inter. Because of that new “three in a row” restriction, Arsenal cannot be drawn to play away at San Siro this season. The fixture is effectively blocked. What remains very much on the table, though, is Inter visiting the Emirates Stadium. Same opponents, different backdrop, a familiar rivalry recast under north London lights.
Anticipation builds
The names in Pot 1, Pot 2, Pot 3 and Pot 4 are now locked in, even if the exact combinations remain a mystery for a few more days. Somewhere inside that matrix lies Arsenal’s European road map: the glamour nights, the awkward away trips, the tests that will define how far this title-winning side can stretch itself on the continent.
No one at the Emirates will complain about missing another gruelling trip to San Siro. But in a competition where there are no soft paths anymore, the real question is simple: if it’s not Milan, which cauldron will Arsenal have to conquer instead?
