Arda Güler's Rise at Real Madrid: From Gamble to Key Player
Arda Güler’s Madrid rise is about to be written in ink, not just in performances.
After Spanish daily AS revealed on Thursday that talks were moving in the right direction, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano pushed the story several steps further the same day: Real Madrid have reached full agreement with the 21-year-old’s camp on a new long-term deal.
The contract is expected to run at least until 2031. Romano even reports an agreement through 2032, a length that would place Güler among the club’s true long-haul bets. Only summer arrival Yan Diomande, signed for a hefty €125 million and tied down until 2033, would be committed to the club for longer.
For Güler, it marks a definitive change of status. When he arrived from Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023, his original deal ran to 2029. That already signalled belief. This extension shouts it.
From €28m gamble to €90m jewel
Real Madrid paid €28 million to prise Güler away from Fenerbahce. At the time, it looked like a bold move for a teenager still learning his trade. That fee now feels like a bargain.
His market value has rocketed to around €90 million, making the left-footed playmaker the most valuable Turkish footballer by some distance. The club’s hierarchy sees the same thing the numbers do: a cornerstone, not a prospect.
His pay packet is set to catch up with his importance. Güler had reportedly been earning around €5 million per year. The new deal is expected to bring a sharp rise, aligning his salary with his role in a squad packed with stars but short on players who can do what he does between the lines.
From talent to necessity
The transformation has happened on the pitch, not in the boardroom.
Last season, Güler quietly built his case, then hammered it home. Across all competitions he produced 20 goal involvements in 51 appearances, steadily moving from impact substitute to regular starter. Each month, he asked the same question of his coaches with growing insistence: how can you leave me out?
This season, under new head coach Jose Mourinho, he has wasted no time in reinforcing the point. Güler has started three of Real Madrid’s first four league matches and, in each of those starts, delivered a goal and an assist. Different games, same outcome: he influences the scoreboard.
Only a suspension carried over from last season kept him out of the Champions League opener, a 2-1 win against Inter Milan. Even then, his absence was a talking point. That is how you know a player has crossed the line from promising to pivotal.
A year ago, Arda Güler arrived as the next big thing. With this contract, Real Madrid are treating him as something else entirely: a pillar of their future, locked in for the long haul and expected to shape the club’s next era from the heart of midfield.
