Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before joining Lyon in 2024, is understood to be energised by the move and the chance to play a central role in Sunderland’s first European campaign in 51 years. The club have already moved for experience and depth this summer. Defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie are in, as is midfielder Jules Ahoka, all recruited after Sunderland finished seventh in their first season back in the top division.
