Real Madrid Faces Midfield Crisis Ahead of Champions League Opener

Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign will start under a cloud of absences, and not just from the treatment room.

As the European giants prepare to welcome Serie A champions Inter Milan to the Spanish capital on Tuesday night in the new League Phase, José Mourinho has been stripped of three of his most gifted midfielders – not by injury, but by suspension carried over from last season.

Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are all banned for the opening fixture after each saw red in their final European appearances of the 2025/26 campaign. The cards now bite hard, leaving a sizeable hole in the heart of Madrid’s side for one of the toughest assignments of their group schedule.

In a squad already stretched, it is a brutal twist.

Mourinho is contending with a lengthy absentee list before suspensions even enter the conversation. Rodrygo, Éder Militão and Ferland Mendy remain sidelined, stripping Real of pace in attack, leadership in defence and balance on the left flank. Those injuries alone would test the depth of most squads.

Now comes the added complication: a midfield reshaped by force, not design.

Camavinga’s energy, Güler’s invention and Bernardo’s control between the lines offer three very different profiles, all of which would have been invaluable against an Inter side that thrives on structure and rhythm. Instead, Mourinho must redraw his plans, reassign responsibilities and lean on the remaining core to carry the weight of an early statement night in Europe.

The stage remains the same. The stakes do too. But Real Madrid will walk into their Champions League opener knowing that three of their brightest midfield talents can only watch as Inter arrive in town, Scudetto in hand and scenting opportunity.
