United’s interest in the Bayern Munich defender is no accident. The club have long loved players who can plug multiple gaps without a drop in quality, and Stanisic fits that brief almost perfectly.
The Croatia international is listed as a right-back, but that barely tells the story. At 26, he has already played across the entire backline for Bayern. Last season he made 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back, and two in the centre of defence. Reports indicate the German champions would only entertain offers in the region of £47 million to £56 million, with figures of €55 million to €65 million mentioned as a likely threshold just to start negotiations.
On top of that, Bayern are expected to insist on significant performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause in any package. In other words: if you want him, you pay, and you pay properly.
The United equation
On paper, United should be able to afford that level of investment for a player entering his peak years and already proven at the top level. The club’s financial muscle remains intact, even if spending is now more tightly scrutinised under INEOS.
The question is not just about money.
