From those academy foundations, he stepped into the senior game with Radomlje, before signing for ND Slovan, where he has already made 17 competitive appearances.

Those 17 games may not echo around the continent, but they have clearly been loud enough for India’s selectors. A commanding presence, hardened in a physically demanding league, now walks into a camp that will soon be staring down some of the most feared attacking lines in world football.

The stage has been set by the fixture list. India open their international series against Panama in Bengaluru on September 26, a test in its own right and a vital tune-up. Then comes the headline act. On October 3, in Kolkata, the Blue Tigers meet Brazil. Three days later, at the same venue, they face Uruguay.
