Jurrien Timber's Return Boosts Arsenal Ahead of Sunderland Clash

Mikel Arteta has Jurrien Timber back on the brink. And for a champion side trying to keep its stride, the timing could hardly be better.

The Dutch defender, out since the Champions League final last season, is edging towards a first appearance of the campaign as Arsenal head to Sunderland on Saturday evening. He travelled with the squad for the 1-0 win at Napoli in midweek, a quiet but significant step in a long road back.

“Let’s see,” Arteta said when asked if Timber will be involved at the Stadium of Light. “We have another training session today. He’s been training with us for a few days. Let’s see.”

For Arsenal, even the possibility feels like a jolt of energy. Timber’s return would hand Arteta another high-level option in a back line that has already had to absorb early-season bumps.

Cristhian Mosquera, who missed the wins over Chelsea and Napoli with a knock, is “doing really well,” according to Arteta, but remains a doubt for the weekend. William Saliba is also sidelined, leaving the champions potentially light in central defence again if Mosquera does not make it.

The concerns stop there. Ben White, withdrawn in Italy, has been reported as fine, easing fears of another key absentee.

“Last year we dropped points there and in the last minute,” he said. “We experienced and learned a lot from that game.”

That memory will frame the team talk. The message is clear: control the chaos this time.

“Tomorrow we will discuss many things we want to be aware of and where we want to take the game and how to nullify their strengths,” Arteta added.

The champions go back to a ground that halted their charge once. This time they arrive with a flawless record, a deeper scar tissue, and, just maybe, Jurrien Timber waiting to step back into the fight.
