Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon: A Full-Circle Journey

A familiar face is back between the posts at Plough Lane. AFC Wimbledon have brought goalkeeper Joe Bursik home, signing the 26-year-old on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season.

For Bursik, this is not just another move. It is a return to the club where it all started. He first walked through Wimbledon’s doors as an eight-year-old, a kid with gloves too big and dreams even bigger, before leaving for Stoke City at 16 to chase a pathway into the professional game.

He has packed plenty into the years since. At Stoke, Bursik broke into the first team in the 2020-2021 campaign and made an impression quickly, keeping seven clean sheets in 16 Championship appearances. Those performances underlined his potential: agile, vocal, and unafraid to command his box.

His development then took him on the well-trodden route of loan spells, each one adding another layer of experience. Telford. Accrington. Doncaster. Peterborough. Different divisions, different pressures, same objective – to sharpen the edges of a promising career.

Portsmouth moved for him in September 2025, adding depth and competition to their goalkeeping ranks. Bursik went on to make 10 league appearances for Pompey and was trusted on a big stage too, starting against Arsenal in a 4-1 FA Cup third-round defeat at Fratton Park. The scoreline was harsh, the occasion anything but small.

Now comes a new chapter wrapped in old colours. Wimbledon get a goalkeeper who knows the club’s badge, its story, its journey back to Plough Lane. Bursik gets the chance to anchor a season from a place that still feels like home.
