Enzo Fernández Joins Manchester City as Record Signing

Enzo Fernández arrives at Manchester City not just as a record signing, but as a player his new teammates were actively campaigning for.

Manager Enzo Maresca revealed that in the frantic final days of the transfer window, several City players were checking in with one question: Is Enzo coming? They wanted him in their dressing room. They wanted him on their side.

They got their wish.

Fernández, 25, completed a joint-British record £125m move from Chelsea on deadline day, reuniting with Maresca and stepping into a midfield that has been ripped up and rebuilt at huge cost. He is expected to make his debut on Saturday at Etihad Stadium against newly promoted Coventry City, and his manager has no doubts about his readiness.

“I know Enzo quite well and I know what he can bring to the team,” Maresca said. “He is a winner – a winner’s mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup.”

That winning edge is exactly what City’s players have been craving. Maresca did not hide how strong the internal demand was.

“I can promise you that in the last four or five days four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us,” he said. “It’s very important that he is with us and we are 100% happy with that.”

At Chelsea, Maresca had trusted Fernández with the captain’s armband. At City, the hierarchy is different. Ruben Dias has been confirmed as the new club captain, taking over from Bernardo Silva, who departed in the summer. Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma form the rest of the leadership group in a dressing room reshaped as aggressively as the squad itself.

If there were any doubts about where Fernández’s head is, his own words this week underlined the point. In an in-house interview released on Thursday, the Argentina international said he had always “dreamed of being at a club as big as City”. The line landed heavily at Stamford Bridge, where it was viewed as a clear slight on Chelsea.

The truth is his mind had already gone. Fernández’s heart had been set on leaving since the turn of the year, and even talks this summer with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso could not pull him back.

“In football many things happen,” Alonso said. “With Enzo we have had conversations and always with respect. What he has done for the club has been great, but now it’s time to move forward. We have players with quality in every position and now we are ready to go.”

City, though, are moving in a very different direction – and at a staggering financial pace. The club spent a transfer window record £458m on new signings, with £327m poured into a revamped midfield built around Fernández, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The overhaul did not stop there. Wingers Iliman Ndiaye and Allan arrived to sharpen the attack, while Geronimo Rulli came in as back-up goalkeeper. Player sales recouped more than £300m, softening the outlay but not the statement.

Maresca made a point of crediting the hierarchy for backing such an ambitious rebuild.

“I am very happy for the effort from the ownership, [chairman] Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and [director of football] Hugo [Viana]. Very happy,” he said. “In the last days, Iliman and Enzo arrived, and now the squad is complete – it’s finished. Now it is time to work.”

The money has been spent. The dressing room has spoken. The manager has his midfielder.

Now Fernández has to show why an already star-studded squad was so desperate for him to walk through the door.
