Edson Álvarez Denies Kidnapping Allegations Linked to Documentary

Edson Álvarez has moved to distance himself firmly from dramatic allegations emerging from Mexico, insisting he had no part in an alleged kidnapping linked to a documentary about his life.

The West Ham and Mexico captain issued a forceful denial after film producer Juan José López Ordoñez claimed he was abducted at gunpoint in Mexico City earlier this year by individuals connected to Álvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla.

López Ordoñez told Mexican outlet TV Notas that he was seized in the Polanco district of the capital in 2024 and forced into a vehicle. He alleges he had been hired to produce a documentary on Álvarez and was owed £150,000 for the project. While he said Álvarez did not directly participate in the kidnapping, he claimed the midfielder knew about the plot.

Álvarez has hit back publicly, rejecting any attempt to link him to the case and signalling he is ready to take the matter to court.

“I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” he wrote on social media, stressing that his profile had been used to fuel a media storm around something he insists is not his fight.

“Over the past several months, my name and image have repeatedly been used to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me.

“Until now, I had chosen not to respond. However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line.”

Álvarez accused some outlets of chasing “sensationalism” over “accuracy and truth” and made clear his priority remains his family and his career.

The 26-year-old, who debuted for Mexico in 2017 and now wears the armband for his country, joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has already clocked up 74 appearances for the Hammers. This season, though, he has been largely on the fringes, featuring just once so far, in the Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth.

On the pitch, he is fighting to regain his place. Off it, he has drawn a line in the sand, ready to defend his name under the full glare of international scrutiny.
