Derby’s season finally caught fire with a thunderbolt.

After a winless start that had already begun to gnaw at the edges of early optimism, the Rams found their release against Portsmouth, and it arrived via the right boot of Lars-Jorgen Salvesen.

The striker’s decisive strike didn’t just win a game. It changed the mood.

Former Derby County midfielder Darren Robinson, watching on, could hardly disguise his admiration for the finish that settled it.

“It was a quality finish in the way he came on to the ball and it was a confident finish,” Robinson said, highlighting the assurance that had been missing from Derby’s attacking play in recent weeks.

“There were lots of shots from distance, particularly from Portsmouth, but they lacked that cutting edge – but you watch that finish by Salvesen,” Robinson noted. “He comes on to it and he absolutely thumps it – it was still rising as it hit the back of the net.”

“It was an important time to score because the crowd were building a bit of energy,” Robinson said. “Portsmouth had given that reaction after half-time and that really burst the bubble.”
