Chelsea’s pursuit of Manu Koné did not end with the transfer deadline. It merely paused.

The French midfielder spent the final hours of the summer window at the centre of a tug-of-war, as Chelsea pushed hard to bring him to London and opened talks with Roma. The Premier League club moved late, but decisively. Roma listened. The deal still died.

For now, Koné remains in Rome, a key piece in Gasperini’s plans and a symbol of the coach’s authority over squad building. Chelsea, watching from a distance, are unlikely to stay quiet for long.
