Chelsea's Failed Pursuit of Kone: Mbappé's Advice Goes Unheeded

Chelsea went to Kylian Mbappé for advice. They ended up with nothing.

In one of the more intriguing subplots of the summer window, manager Alonso leaned on an old Real Madrid connection before Chelsea pushed the button on a big-money move for Roma midfielder Kone, according to Foot Mercato. With Fernandez edging towards a British-record transfer to the Etihad Stadium, the club trawled the market for a replacement who could walk straight into the Premier League storm.

Mbappé, captain of France and Kone’s leader at international level, did not hesitate. His verdict on the Roma man was glowing: a top-level midfielder, ready for England’s intensity, ready for the spotlight. On the back of that endorsement, Chelsea accelerated.

The numbers underlined their intent. A deal worth €70m (£60m) was quickly thrashed out with Roma, a fee that sailed past Kone’s initial valuation and signalled how badly Chelsea wanted him. Personal terms? Also agreed. At 23, Kone was reportedly desperate to swap Rome for West London and anchor a new-look midfield.

Then deadline day happened.

With the paperwork poised and Chelsea expecting a breakthrough, Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini stepped in and shut the move down. No late compromise, no creative solution. Just a firm block that left Chelsea’s hierarchy and the player staring at a deal that had evaporated in the final hours.

It was not the only body blow. A spectacular collapse in negotiations for Monaco’s Lamine Camara compounded the frustration and left Chelsea’s midfield plans in tatters. What should have been a reshaped engine room now looks worryingly light.

The context makes it worse. Romeo Lavia continues to wrestle with long-term fitness issues. Moises Caicedo has had his own recent injury problems. Alonso, who had mapped out a tactical structure built on power and control in the middle, suddenly faces a season where his options may be dictated as much by the medical room as by the tactics board.

All of this comes against the backdrop of a seismic outgoing. Fernandez’s departure was finally confirmed in a staggering £125m deal, a move that strengthens Enzo Maresca’s already lavishly stocked squad. The former Benfica midfielder laid out his reasoning in simple terms: “If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.”

For Chelsea, those words sting a little. They lose the technical security and passing range that had underpinned their midfield, without the comfort of a marquee replacement to steady the picture.

The timing could hardly be harsher. Arsenal, reigning Premier League champions and in ruthless early-season form, arrive on Sunday. Chelsea have started brightly enough with wins over Fulham and Brighton, but even in victory the thinness in central areas has been hard to ignore. Supporters can see the gap. So can opponents.

Alonso must now improvise. Does he trust youth and energy to cover for the absence of a true Fernandez successor? Does he adjust his structure, accept less control in possession, and lean into transition football to mask the lack of depth? Every selection will carry a trade-off, every tweak a risk.

For all the intrigue of Mbappé’s involvement, his recommendation ultimately lives only on the scouting report. Chelsea clearly want players wired like him – ruthless, decisive, comfortable at the highest level. They thought Kone might be one of them.

Without his signature on the contract, that vision remains theoretical. The reality will be written in the weeks ahead, in a midfield that now has to punch above its weight against the best team in the country.
