The yellow wall knows this story well. Champions League nights in Dortmund usually begin with noise, belief, and, more often than not, three points.

Borussia Dortmund’s record in opening home games in Europe’s elite competition is striking: four wins, two draws and just a single defeat. That lone blemish came a lifetime ago in football terms, on 13 September 1995, when Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side fell 3-1 to eventual champions Juventus. Since then, no visiting team has managed to turn Matchday 1 in Dortmund into a losing start for BVB.

The numbers from recent years only deepen that sense of ritual. Dortmund’s last four Champions League openers at home read like a controlled tightening of the screw: 1-0 against Ajax in 2012, 2-0 against Arsenal in 2014, a goalless arm-wrestle with Barcelona in 2019, then a commanding 3-0 win over Copenhagen in 2022. Not a single goal conceded in that run. On these nights, the first whistle tends to sound like a starting gun, not a warning siren.

For Villarreal CF, the script has been very different. The Spanish side have never won on the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League. Three draws, two defeats – a pattern that keeps repeating just when momentum is supposed to build. At the start of last season, they slipped to a 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur, another reminder that Matchday 1 has rarely been kind to them.

So one club walks into the competition carried by habit and history, the other still searching for a way to break its own. Under the floodlights, something has to give.
