Aleksandar Pavlovic Rejects Manchester City Move
Aleksandar Pavlovic never even had to say no.
According to Bild, Manchester City had quietly ringed his name in red back in March, identifying the Bayern Munich midfielder as their top choice to reshape the heart of their team. The plan was bold: pay up to €100 million, bring in one of Europe’s most elegant young pivots, and build the next version of City around him.
The problem? Pavlovic had no intention of leaving Bavaria.
City’s succession plan hits a wall
By spring, the Etihad hierarchy already knew Pep Guardiola was stepping down and Enzo Maresca would be the man to follow him. The change on the touchline did not alter the target. Maresca, steeped in Guardiola’s positional play, personally tried to convince Pavlovic to cross the Channel.
He got nowhere.
The Germany international made his stance clear: no transfer, no Premier League adventure, no City. With Pavlovic categorically ruling out the move, City never even reached the stage of placing an official offer. The chase ended before it really began.

While Pavlovic stayed rooted in Munich, City’s midfield was torn up around the edges and straight through the middle.

For a long stretch of the summer, the response looked oddly thin for a club of City’s scale. Only Elliot Anderson, signed from Nottingham for €135 million, arrived to plug the gaps in central midfield. One fresh face, four major departures. The balance looked wrong.
Then came the late scramble.
A €375m rebuild without the first choice
As the window crept toward its close, City finally moved with their familiar financial force. Ayyoub Bouaddi came in from Lille for €95 million. Enzo Fernandez followed from Chelsea for €145 million. Three new midfielders, €375 million spent in that zone alone.
On paper, Maresca now has numbers and profiles: Anderson’s energy, Bouaddi’s promise, Fernandez’s range. What he does not have is the player City initially wanted to build around. The entire reconstruction of the midfield took place without the man who sat at the top of their list.
Pavlovic stayed put. And flourished.
Bayern’s homegrown anchor
The 22-year-old, a product of Bayern’s academy, stepped fully into the spotlight last season. He made 44 competitive appearances for the club, scoring four goals and adding two assists, but the numbers only tell part of the story. He looked like he belonged in Bayern’s midfield from the moment he walked in.
Germany took note. Pavlovic made his international debut in June 2024 and has already collected 15 caps. In a national team searching for stability in the centre of the pitch, he has quickly become more than just another option.
City were ready to pay. Ready to hand him the keys to a new era. Yet the player chose continuity, minutes, and the familiar red of Bayern over the bright lights of the Etihad.
The money moved anyway. The midfield at City looks completely different. And somewhere in Munich, a 22-year-old who turned down England is quietly shaping his own team’s future instead.
